The new Globe theater is a faithful reconstruction of the original globe playhouse, where Shakespeare wrote and performer his first plays. Like the original theater, it is circular, so as many people as possible can see the stage.
The biggest problem for the architects was that nobody knew exactly what the original playhouse looked like. There weren’t any original plans. They had to listen to advice from the historians. But slowly, they developed the plans, and they built the theatre using Elizabethan building techniques. They used the same bricks, and even has a thatched roof,. The new theatre is ten meters high and thirty meters in diameter. It holds over 1400 people.
The original Globe Playhouse was built in 1599. In those days everybody went to the theater, rich and poor people. It cost a penny to stand near the stage, two pence to sit in the gallery, and three pence for a seat high above the stage. People got up, sat down, laughed, talked, walked about and threw things at the actors. They ate nuts, like we eat popcorns in the cinema. There were no actresses because women were not allowed to act, but they could watch. Elizabeth I was Shakespeare’s biggest fan!
