William Shakespeare’s Hamlet – Directed by Kennethh Branagh
The film is set in the Denmark of the 19th century. King hamlet of Denmark is murdered by his brother Claudius who becomes King and marries his wife Gertrude.
Hamlet’s son. Prince of Denmark. Also named hamlet, returns home and is openly critical of his mother remarriage to his uncle Claudius. Horatio, hamlet’s best friend, tries to comfort him. The ghost of hamlet’s dead father tells his son about the murder and demands revenge. Hamlet feigns madness at court. Polonius, a courtier and lord chamberlain, suggests to Claudius and Gertrude that hamlet may be pining for his daughter Ophelia. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two of hamlet’s fellows from the university, arrive at Ellsinore castle, called by Claudius to spy the prince.
Under Hamlet’s direction, a troupe of travelling actors perform a play at court which mirrors the murder of the old king and Claudius reveals his guilt. Polonius hides in Gertrude’s room ti listen to her conversation with hamlet, but hamlet stabs and kills him. Gertrude repents her marriage. Claudius realising that hamlet knows his secret sends him to England to be murdered, but hamlet manages to escape and return to Denmark.
During hamlet’s absence Ophelia is driven to madness and suicide by her father’s death and hamlet’s rejection. Laertes, Ophelia’s brother, returns to Ellsinore and swears vengeance for his father’s and sister’s death. He plots with Claudius to kill hamlet in a duel with poisoned swords and poisoned drinks, the duel goes ahead, but Gertrude drinks the potion by accident and Laertes and hamlet are poisoned. Before dying, Laertes reveals Claudius scheming and hamlet kills him before dying himself. Fortinbras arrives to find the court covered with corpses and is crowned king.
